Sustainable Food Project – Local Food Guide

The Winter Park Harvest Festival is a proud sponsor of an incredible Local Food guide debuting this Summer.  Over the last two years the dedicated volunteers at the Simple Living Institute have been compiling the first comprehensive listing of farms, community gardens, and farmers markets in the region.
Andrew Landis, director of the project, will be previewing the Guide this Wednesday night at the Organic Growers Meeting at Leu Gardens. Come out and meet other passionate local food peeps, urban gardeners and fellow friends of the Festival.
Hope to see you there. Click the image or HERE for details.

Small Farms Conference in July

Kamrin and I attended the Small Farms conference last year and besides learning a ton about Florida Farming we were able to network with some truly inspiring agricultural entrepreneurs and visionaries.  Since last years conference I have had the opportunity to work with many of these wonderful people on the food centric issues that I champion.

If you have any interest in the issues surrounding local food production, distribution, policies, best practices etc. this is an event you won’t want to miss.  Plus….I can’t think of a better primer for anyone wanting to become more involved with the issues that inspired me to found the Winter Park Harvest Festival.

I hope you’ll join the us next month and I look forward to the conversations and synergy this event fosters.

For more details you can click the Small Farms image above, but here is  a brief summary of what to expect:

The purpose of the Florida Small Farms and Alternative Enterprises Conference is to provide farmers with more in-depth educational information, to facilitate networking, dialog, and visioning among members of the Florida small farms community, and to increase awareness of the small farms industry to decision makers, supporting institutions, and the general public.

The conference will provide high quality educational and networking activities geared to small farms. Concurrent educational sessions (presentations, workshops, hands-on demonstration, and discussion groups) will be provided to share results of groundbreaking research and provide educational support for producers to operate sustainable and profitable enterprises.

Urban Farming Workshop

Sharon Yeago of the Farmers Market Coalition and I had the good fortune of spending an hour with Richard Tyson, Orange County’s IFAS extension office Director.

One of the major insights that came out of that meeting was the lack of small growers in Central Florida.  Both Sharon and Richard acknowledged that “Growing Growers” is an area worthy of our efforts going forward.

To that end the Orange County extension office is hosting an Urban Farming Workshop this Wednesday from 9 am to 3 pm at the Orange County Extension Education Center.  At $15 this workshop is one of the few bargains you’ll find when it comes to agricultural education.

I will be attending the workshop and will share some highlights and insights with you later this week.  I’m looking forward to meeting other urban farmers and gleaning some best practices from the experienced growers teaching this course.

Agrarian Urbanism presentation by Andres Duany

I am really looking forward to a talk about Agrarian Urbanism taking place this Wednesday at Rollins.  The details are bellow, but suffice it to say we are very fortunate to have Andres Duany coming to Winter Park.

Andres is a pioneer in the New Urbanism movement and will be speaking about the importance of incorporating agriculture into our contemporary lives and the lives of our cities. Duany is a major proponent of stifling further urban sprawl and the culture disinvestment that comes along with it.

Duany will give examples of evolving and in-practice solutions from work he and his firm, Duany Plater-Zyberk, have undertaken in that direction.

Accompanied by gorgeous illustrations of food production along the entire transect, from wild forageable land to window, Duany will introduce the theory of Agrarian Urbanism and how he sees it going forward and changing the world.
